POSITION SUMMARY

WPR is seeking a board operator with a passion for talk radio to contribute to the Ideas Network’s morning programs. The Ideas Network features more locally produced programs than any other public radio station in the U.S. and reaches a growing audience of more than 320,000 listeners across Wisconsin. As a Board Operator / Technical Director, you will actively ensure the audio quality of our programming. During live talk show broadcasts, you will run the audio console, voice weather and forward promotions, get guests ready to be on air, play transitions and audio elements and communicate with the show producers and host.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Serve as primary broadcast console operator for the morning talk shows, ensuring proper audio levels and smooth transitions between audio elements.
  2. Present live inserts during programming on The Ideas Network; prepare information for on-air presentation including weather and forward promotion.
  3. Monitor programming on The Ideas Network as scheduled for audio quality and to ensure correct operation of program elements; file discrepancy reports as required.
  4. Monitor various sources to watch for severe weather and breaking news; broadcast warnings/announcements on-air as needed.
  5. Engineer and edit interviews and audio clips for later broadcast, often on a tight deadline.
  6. Prepare automation voice tracks for afternoon, evening, and/or weekend programming as needed.
  7. Serve as backup for weekday and weekend announcer.
  8. Serve as broadcast console operator and announcer for WPR/NPR news/election specials as needed.
  9. Edit and distribute Ideas Network program notes via email daily as needed.

  11. Know and follow all departmental best practices found on the WPR intranet, and contribute to their further development.
  12. Effectively engage diverse perspectives and experiences and demonstrate respect for others in all workplace relationships and interactions.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Ability to work and problem solve independently; remaining accountable to independently and accurately report technical difficulties that arise.
  • Aural acuity to detect and, when possible, correct barely perceptible imperfections in recorded sound quality.
  • Strict attention to detail on and off the air.
  • Strict adherence to the clock on and off the air.
  • Announcing style and vocal quality suitable for statewide broadcast.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Resiliency and good judgment when faced with the unexpected.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • In-depth knowledge of digital studio computer equipment and software.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills, including strict attention to detail.
  • Two years operating on-air broadcast equipment.
  • Speak, read and write copy in a conversational broadcast style.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

PREFERRED BUT NOT REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous public radio experience.
  • Proficiency in AudioVault software.
  • Knowledge of Wisconsin issues and personalities.
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent experience.

SALARY

The minimum for this position is $38,000; expected pay is in the low to mid 40’s with actual pay dependent upon qualifications, experience and official title.
