Job Description:

Producer, The Morning Show

The Opportunity

WPR is seeking an experienced producer with a passion for talk radio to contribute to The Ideas Network’s morning drive program, The Morning Show. The Ideas Network is unlike any other public radio service. It features more locally produced programs than any other public radio station and reaches a growing audience of more than 340,000 listeners across Wisconsin. The Morning Show is heard weekday mornings from 6:00 until 9:00. This is a rare and exciting opportunity to join The Ideas Network as it reimagines its morning drive program.

The Organization

As a public radio pioneer, Wisconsin Public Radio has a strong commitment to innovation, on air and online. Over its 100-year history, WPR has grown into a two-service network that serves nearly 500,000 weekly listeners through broadcast, and we have a growing online community. WPR is well-supported by its listeners with more than 54,000 donors.  We want our staff and programming to reflect the rich culture and diversity of our state and actively encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply. WPR is headquartered in Madison on the University of Wisconsin campus, just down the street from the state Capitol.

Responsibilities

As producer for The Morning Show you would pitch topic and guest ideas in editorial meetings and follow through by locating, pre-interviewing and scheduling lively, articulate guests who represent a variety of perspectives, often for next-day booking. Your research, background materials and interview questions prepare the host. As a producer you would also be responsible for on-air production duties, such as managing listener calls, emails and social media interactions and directing the show as necessary. You would also have the opportunity to put your creativity to work by writing engaging online content for The Ideas Network on WPR.org and social media.

Qualifications

Must be an avid news consumer, thrive on deadlines and enjoy working independently. Excellent writing, communication and organizational skills are also required, in addition to two years’ experience in talk show production or directly transferable experience.

Compensation

We expect to pay $42,000 - $50,000 dependent upon qualifications, experience and official title. UW-Extension offers a comprehensive benefits package, including generous vacation, sick leave, healthcare and pension.
