Job Description:

Summary

The Director of Content is a member of WMFE’s senior leadership, overseeing content staff and all aspects of WMFE and WMFV’s content production and output on all platforms, with a goal of providing high quality content that meets the needs of current and potential audience members across Central Florida.

 

Primary Functions

  • Editorial Standards and Ethics
    • Ensures ethical editorial standards are maintained across all WMFE and WMFV content through the establishment and implementation of ethics policies for content.
  • Strategy and Planning
    • Works with content and other relevant station staff to create and update a strategic plan for content; directs and ensures implementation of the plan.
    • Stays abreast of trends and developments in media and works with content staff to devise strategies to respond to and take advantage of them, including:
      • Emerging content platforms
      • Impact measurement
      • Implications of changing content delivery platforms for ethical journalism.
    • Ensures content decisions align with strategic priorities, with particular attention to capacity management, i.e., ensuring new initiatives align with existing or planned resources.
    • Facilitates communication and connections among station departments to ensure the success of content initiatives.
  • Community Engagement and Audience Service
    • Discerns community and audience preferences through analysis of audience data, surveys, focus groups, listening sessions, and other community engagement activities.
    • Ensures content decisions involve the community and take audience preferences and community input into account.
    • Works with Managing Editor and other appropriate content staff to seek opportunities for content partnerships in the community.

 

  • Funding
    • Works with development staff to secure funding for content priorities.
      • Keeps abreast of grant possibilities that align with content priorities.
      • Communicates with potential funders about plans for content.
      • Writes narratives for grant proposals when appropriate.
      • Ensures all content funding agreements are 1) consistent with principles of ethical journalism and 2) feasible from a resource and capacity standpoint.
  • Programming Oversight and Quality Control
    • Oversees program development, acquisition and scheduling for both stations, in collaboration with Operations and Managing Editor, as appropriate
    • Initiates, interprets and implements all programming research, in collaboration with content staff.
    • Oversees all aspects of the audience experience on-air, online, and in the community. Works to ensure consistent formatics, stationality, and format execution.
    • Works with Managing Editor to ensure on-air staff receive regular and consistent coaching and feedback.
  • Management and Administration
    • Oversees all content personnel; directly manages Managing Editor, Production Manager and Operations Manager.
    • Oversees content department budget, with input from key content staff.
    • As part of the WMFE Leadership Team, participates in station policy development, budgeting, strategic planning, and communication with the Board of Trustees.
    • Ensures compliance with FCC, CPB and other reporting requirements.
    • May assume responsibilities for General Manager in his or her absence.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Required Qualifications

  • At least ten years of professional experience in media and deep understanding of the purposes and mission of public broadcasting
  • At least five years of professional journalism experience and deep knowledge of the ethics and practices of journalism
  • At least five years of management experience; experience working across departments and working with senior management preferred
  • At least two years of professional experience in broadcasting
  • Understanding of and openness to digital platforms as crucial and coequal with broadcast
  • Familiarity with trends in emerging media, community engagement, and audience service
