The Director/General Manager is responsible for day to day management of WUWM and reports to the Dean of the UWM College of Letters and Science.
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee seeks an experienced executive to lead WUWM (89.7 FM), Milwaukee’s most listened to public radio station, as its new General Manager (GM). The General Manager provides clear vision, strategic direction, and builds the organization’s impact in a multi-platform, quickly changing media environment. The GM must be adept at working with National Public Radio (NPR) and other program distributors on network initiatives, as well as understanding the local needs of listeners in Southeastern Wisconsin. Intellectually curious, entrepreneurially oriented, and invested in high quality news and information, the GM models creative thinking and motivates employees, building an organizational culture of enthusiasm. With three senior managers as direct reports, the GM will supervise all aspects of the station, including programming, budget, personnel, fundraising, planning, and consulting with the advisory board. The WUWM 2020 Strategic Plan has guided the organization for the past decade. Designing and implementing the next Strategic Plan will be crucial to the duties of the new GM. Serving as the public face of the organization, the GM works closely with donors, directly asking for funds as necessary. The GM must be honest, open, and subscribe to the highest level of professional ethics.
With a staff of 30 employees, and annual revenues of $4.5 million, WUWM has experienced tremendous growth over the past three decades. The station has increased content creation, become more proficient at raising funds to sustain its operation, and has expanded its impact on the community. Its content is increasingly available on digital platforms, including streaming and podcasts via the WUWM app and the NPR One app. Given its financial stability and award-winning journalism, WUWM is well positioned to become an even more significant creator of original content. In addition to both on-air and off-air staff, WUWM is assisted by a volunteer advisory board, which meets quarterly, on policy, fundraising, programming, and outreach issues.
o Bachelor’s degree
o Minimum of 5 years of management experience
o Minimum of 10 years of experience in a media organization
o Professional experience in public radio and/or public media
o Professional experience in journalism
o Experience in multi-platform programming
o Five or more years supervisory experience
o Experience in financial and budget management
o Development, fundraising, sales, and/or underwriting experience
o Experience with strategic planning
