CPB Statement on Funding Decisions by the House and Senate Appropriations Committees

Washington, DC (July 12, 2018) -- Patricia Harrison, president and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), made the following statement.

“Recently, the House and Senate Appropriations Committee approved the FY 2019 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Appropriations bills, which support funding for public media through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

We appreciate the Committees’ support, which provided level funding of $445 million for CPB’s FY 2021 advance appropriation, $20 million for the public media interconnection system and $27.74 million for Ready To Learn in FY 2019.

The majority of this essential federal investment goes directly to more than 1,500 locally owned and operated public television and public radio stations across our nation. These stations are connected to their communities and engaging on issues of importance, ranging from early education access to high school graduation rates and pathways to careers, to reporting on the opioid epidemic and covering local news and public affairs. Public media stations are also honoring our nation’s veterans and their families by telling their stories, recognizing their sacrifices, and creating dialogue to help bridge the military-civilian divide.

The Committees’ continued support of the Department of Education’s Ready To Learn program benefits our nation’s youngest learners, especially from low-income communities, as they prepare for school and a lifetime of learning. Further, the appropriation bills support continued investment in the public broadcasting interconnection system and other systemwide infrastructure and services, which allows for public media content to be distributed to the American people.

CPB appreciates the trust and support of Congress and the American people as we steward these federal funds in the most efficient and effective way possible to advance public media to the benefit of every American.”
