America After Charleston

SCETV and partners WGBH and PBS NewsHour produced a one-hour televised town hall to explore race and identity in America in the aftermath of the June 17, 2015, murders of nine black parishioners by a white gunman in Charleston's Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. The program was moderated by PBS NewsHour co-anchor Gwen Ifill, and NewsHour Weekend anchor Hari Sreenivasan presented short videos and graphics to frame the discussion on the Confederate flag, racial disparities across issues, and the upcoming general election and the nation's changing demographics. A digital edition of the broadcast is featured on pbs.org/aftercharleston, and social media has been used to interact with audiences and disseminate original and repurposed video and photo elements. The program was taped on September 19, 2015, for original broadcast on Monday, September 21.
