PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs

PBS NewsHour Student Reporting Labs (SRL) is working with participating students to create content for national broadcast and online platforms, with a focus on (1) expanding opportunities for local public media station success by offering an on-ramp to SRL for stations with clear options and templates; (2) increasing youth participation in live and digital initiatives and events, such as American Graduate, elections, and other major national civic events; (3) providing the training, support and equipment that low-SES students need to produce top-quality stories; (4) creating content for local public affairs programming and social media; and (5) increasing opportunities for SRL student station internships, station tours and similar opportunities. The program's video journalism curriculum, teacher training and mentorships produce unique video stories that explore how national issues affect local communities. By amplifying youth voices in national and local dialogues, SRL embodies the education, journalism and service missions of the public broadcasting system. A top priority for SRL is to recruit and maintain diversity with over half of current Labs participants coming from communities of need. This is the first year of a projected three-year project.
