DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Technology supports a diverse community of GBH’ers working in Broadcasting, Content Creation, Education, Digital, Assistive Technologies, Local News and Administrative roles.  Roughly 40 staff members work in 6 teams within the department, and the team is committed to creative problem-solving and respectful candor.  We like to build, improve, launch, automate, and repair.

JOB OVERVIEW

The Master Control Operator is responsible for operation of broadcast and playback systems, as well as monitoring on-air streams and reacting to any on-air technical issues.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work closely with Broadcast Editorial and Traffic to ensure accurate timing and sequencing of programs on the broadcast schedule

• Monitor on-air streams and react to any technical issues that may arise. Document any discrepancies and assist engineering in resolving technical problems.

• Monitor incoming and outgoing terrestrial and satellite feeds to ensure timing and quality. Liaison with the network on any feed issues.

• Facilitate ingest and purge of media and maintain a cloud storage archive of available programs and interstitials. Perform QC of media to verify quality and integrity for playback.

• Document EAS tests and alerts

 

SKILL SET

  • Minimum of 3 years working as a television Master Control Operator or a similar role in the broadcasting industry
  • Working knowledge of master control equipment, including servers, video routers, and automation systems.
  • Strong understanding of broadcast standards, signal flow, and video/audio codecs
  • Ability to react calmly to high-pressure situations in a fast-paced environment
  • Able to perform effectively with little direct supervision. Goal-oriented and organized with exceptional attention to detail
  • Demonstrable passion for learning new technologies and ability to pick up technical concepts rapidly
  • Self-motivated, highly interested in process improvement, takes pride in owning the role and performing one’s best work.
  • Have flexibility with changing programs and processes

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience
