GBH News is transforming into one cohesive, audience-focused, multiplatform news organization that tells the most interesting and distinctive local stories of the day. Our journalism is infused and informed by the diverse communities we serve. We are among the fastest-growing local news providers in Greater Boston and draw on the talent of a multiplatform newsroom that includes radio (89.7 FM); television (Ch. 2); and digital reporting. Our goal -- through in-depth, high-quality journalism -- is to inform, educate, and enlighten our audience and build a collaborative newsroom culture. 

 

JOB OVERVIEW

Basic Black is currently seeking a Producer.  In this position, you will have the opportunity to be an integral part of the production of the program.  We’re looking for someone that has worked on commercial or non-commercial television programs and knows their way around television production from start to finish.  If you have worked on a live or taped television broadcast program that is a plus, along with knowledge and experience working in a multi-platform format and adept at understanding digital platforms. In addition, we’re looking for someone that has field experience and produced video pieces. You’ll dive into researching topics and stories that impact Black, Brown and communities of color. Plus, you will have the opportunity to book/find potential guests and experts from the Greater Boston area and beyond to bring thought - provoking topics and stories to a weekly television program that is also produced for digital platforms.

 

We’re looking for someone who is a critical thinker, someone who is curious and excited about subjects and issues on a variety of topics that relates to Black, Indigenous and people of color.  The individual we seek also must have the cultural competency as it relates to stories and topics that involve recognizing, appreciating and valuing the differences in the beliefs, customs, behaviors and communication styles of individuals and groups with various cultural backgrounds.

 

We are looking for someone with agility, comprehends ambiguity, and initiative to come up with topics and story ideas but also doesn’t mind jumping in to help other members of the team when necessary. 

 

The individual possesses a knowledge of diverse and nuanced concepts, intersectionality to stories and topics that can lead to various paths and differences to approach a subject or story.   This person would be comfortable going out in the field, able to do in-person, virtual interviews and pre-interviews. Looking for someone with a high level of discernment, judgement, and sensitivity when dealing with subjects and guests/people.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Editorial/Research

  • Research stories and topics that can be used for potential upcoming shows; help identify and secure potential guests; gather research for the host in advance to prepare for the program.

 

Production

  • Produce video pieces, field production, seek out and find prospective guests for the program; Search, find and log video or stills that could enhance weekly program topic; prepare lower-third/chyron/font credits; knowledge of licensing and clearing video and stills for broadcast and digital. 

 

Interpersonal Communication

  • Collaborate and come up with ideas, take initiative and not wait for assignments to be handed to them.

 

Social Media/Digital

  • Help manage and post interesting elements onto the show’s social media—Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, assist with digital premiere/live streaming as well as upload the show onto the show digital media sites.

 

Craft service

  • Manage and coordinate craft service for weekly guests including stocking up and ordering supplies.

 

General Administrative

  • Schedule and manage makeup for talent and guests. Coordination of talent and guests; Input show data into PIM file management system.

 

SKILL SET

  • Professional demeanor, responsible, mature and adaptable to changing situations, along with the ability to work with multiple internal departments.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, keeping production team and others up to date on changes and vital and important information.

  • Excellent attention to detail skills; Ability to write, copy-edit and proofread work for tone, clarity, spelling and grammar on the air (fonts/chyrons/lower thirds) and written work.

  • Understanding of the production process of producing a show for air; logging tapes, possess a keen eye for interesting video and shots to incorporate into the program. Able to work with and communicate with production team; Create and organize shoots/call sheets; experience going out with a crew, doing mos’s, gathering b-roll and possibly doing interviews and pieces.

  • Ability to see other people’s points of view and welcome constructive feedback. Proven experience in problem-solving and critical thinking practices within a culturally diverse working environment.

  • Must be comfortable with working autonomously for periods of time and with a group or in a hybrid situation.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and knowledgeable in working on editing software such as Premiere or Avid. Any experience with broadcast systems such as iNews/Media Central is a plus.

  • The individual possesses a knowledge of diverse and nuanced concepts, intersectionality to stories and topics that can lead to various paths and differences to approach a subject or story.  

  • Knowledge of  working with a video camera, or willingness to learn.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or media-related or equivalent work experience required. 3-4 years of relevant experience.  At least two years working on a commercial/public television broadcast television program, preferably live/tape digital and broadcast television. Experience using digital formats and social media platforms; ability to learn Sprout and CMS systems.

Editorial experience: comfortable and curious about searching and finding a broad scope of stories and topics related to Black, Indigenous and people of color for the program; news judgment; possess an understanding of issues and what’s going on in the news and relevant community issues; Some knowledge of licensing and clearing video and stills for broadcast and digital.
