Job Description:

GBH enriches people's lives through programs and services that educate, inspire, and entertain, fostering citizenship and culture, the joy of learning, and the power of diverse perspectives.

At GBH, we believe in the advantages of coming together to build community, mentor and learn from colleagues, and connect more deeply with our mission. As a result, the majority of our staff are hybrid and work both from home and onsite. Our current hybrid approach requires staff to work onsite a minimum of two days each week, every Tuesday and one other day, to be determined by their business unit. Hybrid staff are also welcome to come in additional days each week or may be asked to come in on other days by their manager.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

GBH News is transforming into one cohesive, audience-focused, multiplatform news organization that tells the most interesting and distinctive local stories of the day. Our journalism is infused and informed by the diverse communities we serve. We are among the fastest-growing local news providers in Greater Boston and draw on the talent of a multiplatform newsroom that includes radio (89.7 FM); television (Ch. 2); and digital reporting. Our goal -- through in-depth, high-quality journalism -- is to inform, educate, and enlighten our audience and build a collaborative newsroom culture.

JOB OVERVIEW

The American Dream is unreachable and far out of focus for too many in one of the wealthiest nations in the world and in one of this country’s wealthiest states. As its population diversifies, equity gaps in Massachusetts are also growing, especially along race and class fault lines.

GBH News is deepening its capacity to report on systemic barriers disproportionately blocking marginalized communities from thriving in the Commonwealth by creating a new Equity & Justice reporting unit steeped in community engagement, data, and a focus on both problems and solutions. This unit will operate alongside and in collaboration with other tentpole areas of focus in our newsroom -- politics and civic engagement, education, investigations and impact, and long-form feature storytelling.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take initiative and play a key role in advancing the goals of our Social Justice and Equity unit, ensuring that our efforts are consistently impactful.

  • Deeply care about making a meaningful impact, crowd-sourcing ideas, and connecting with new and diverse audiences.

  • Thrive to cultivate a broad and varied network of sources, actively engaging with the community and building authentic relationships.

  • Demonstrate a proven ability to engage effectively with communities of color and marginalized groups, with a talent for addressing systemic issues through innovative solutions.

  • Utilize creative thinking to swiftly adapt across various platforms, finding a balance between immediate and long-term objectives.

  • Possess strong news judgment, with the ability to identify and amplify underrepresented voices in stories, posts, or conversations.

  • Skillfully produce social and digital content, encompassing text, photos, and videos, utilizing the latest tools, trends, and platforms to deliver compelling material.

  • Collaborate effectively across teams to elevate our journalism across platforms, leveraging our unique stories and ensuring that community voices are heard and valued.

In this role, your enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment to social justice and equity will be pivotal in driving our unit forward and making a meaningful impact in the communities we serve.

SKILL SET

  • Demonstrates solid news judgment and a commitment to journalistic ethics.

  • Proficiently identifies noteworthy moments from our units and shows, rapidly integrating them into our social and digital channels, particularly YouTube, with precision and speed.

  • Exhibits effective and professional use of various social platforms, including Instagram, YouTube, and others.

  • Proves expertise in video production, editing, and YouTube content creation.

  • Possesses a deep understanding of SEO best practices and tactics to optimize content for search engine visibility.

  • Has experience with social live streaming.

  • Familiarity and willingness to learn various content management systems, including ours.

  • Proficient in using transcription services and adept at quickly converting interview audio into compelling web content, incorporating photos or interview videos.

  • Capable of managing social presence strategically, fostering follower growth, increasing engagement over time, and amplifying the work of our show hosts.

  • Possesses a foundational understanding of universal design principles and best practices for ensuring inclusivity and accessibility on digital and social platforms.

  • Demonstrates strong copywriting and copy-editing abilities, with a working knowledge of AP Style.

  • Proficiency in speaking more than one language is a valuable asset.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience required

  • 1-3 years of experience in multimedia production, especially for digital video

  • 1-3 years of experience in a newsroom environment
