Job Description:

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Marketing and Communications has primary responsibility for increasing awareness and viewership of SOPBS programs and services, and recognition that SOPBS is deserving of financial support. This will be accomplished through marketing activities that build the SOPBS brand, mission, content and community services.

Reports to: CEO
Hours: Full-time, exempt position. Occasional evening and weekend hours required. 

Responsibilities:

  1. Work with supervisor and staff members to develop and manage strategic promotional plans that connect SOPBS content and services with those most interested and likely to engage through print, web, broadcast, and paid/trade/social media.
  2. Overseeing the brand identity and voice of the station, ensuring its consistency and proper use across all channels. This includes keeping the SOPBS brand in compliance with the PBS brand.
  3. Maintain station website, publishing programming and community content. Publish all public files documents on regular schedule to keep station in compliance.
  4. Manage and edit bi-monthly publication, SPOTLIGHT, distributed to SOPBS members and sponsors. Keep schedule of all ads, plan content, and ensure all content it to designer in timely manner. Work with printer and post office to ensure timely delivery. Post SPOTLIGHT online.
  5. Maintain and oversee the station’s social media channels, promoting programming information, proof of performance and other community news. Staying apprised of audience trends to ensure the station is well represented. Joining new platforms as the need arises. Running campaigns to increase reach and followers.
  6. Write, edit and design promotional materials for assigned projects, including news releases, email newsletter, external publications, and collateral materials for program events and campaigns. Maintain SOPBS’s online art direction and internal electronic press files.
  7. Monitor analytics for the station and develop future strategies and goals. This includes web traffic, online viewing trends / statistics, social media statistics, email statistics and more.
  8. Develop station promotional materials, including advertising, handouts, promo items and more.
  9. Work on grant applications with strategic team members to gain funding for special projects.
  10. Helping to plan, promote and staff station events in the community.
  11. Manage local media trade relationships, as well as develop and implement associated advertising promotion in print, on-air and online.
  12. Work with colleagues to post appropriate reports to FCC web portal to keep station in compliance.
  13. Maintain regular contact with newspaper columnists and media representatives throughout the SOPBS service area to develop productive relationships that support SOPBS’s goals and its communication campaigns and priorities.
  14. Contribute to the success of others on the SOPBS team, including the Board of Directors.
  15. Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Essential Job Skills:

  1. Graphic design expertise with Adobe Creative Suite (CS) including InDesign and Photoshop.
  2. Ability to write and edit clear, concise, persuasive copy and promotional materials.
  3. Website management and development skills.
  4. Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  5. Strategic mindset that presents new ideas and opportunities to further the station’s mission.
  6. Represent SOPBS at events during and outside of regular business hours in a professional way.
  7. Employ organization and planning skills to have multiple projects in process simultaneously.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  1. Bachelor’s degree is required.
  2. Minimum of 2+ years of experience in the marketing or communications field or relevant editorial/design experience.
  3. Demonstrated skill in writing and editing clear, concise, and persuasive copy.
  4. Interaction skills to work productively within and across departments to obtain and clarify information, as well as the ability to suggest new and/or different approaches.
  5. Ability to develop unique and novel solutions to communications and publicity issues.
  6. Understanding of digital marketing with ability to plan and manage campaigns.
  7. Ease and comfort working in a diverse, fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and with multicultural groups and audiences.
  8. Experience with publishing, printing, web and video processes.
